SEMrush vs. Moz Pro: Which SEO Giant Gives You More Actionable Data?

This comparison is usually run on feature counts, which SEMrush wins and which tells you nothing. The useful question is narrower: when you open the tool on a Monday morning, which one puts a decision in front of you?

We have run both across client accounts for years. They are good at different jobs.

SEMrush: breadth, and the cost of it

SEMrush is not an SEO tool, it is a competitive intelligence platform with SEO inside it. Paid keywords, ad copy history, traffic estimates and PR mentions in one place is genuinely valuable, and it is also why the interface takes a month to learn and why most seats use under a fifth of it.

Moz Pro: fewer answers, clearer ones

Moz does less and explains more. Page Optimization gives you a ranked list of fixes for a single URL, in order, with the reason attached — which is the closest either tool comes to telling you what to do on Monday.

  • SEMrush if you also buy paid search
  • Moz if the report has to be read by a non-specialist
  • SEMrush's site audit is the stronger of the two
  • Moz's keyword difficulty is the more conservative
SEMrush vs. Moz Pro: Which SEO Giant Gives You More Actionable Data?

The answer nobody wants

For most teams under twenty people, Moz Pro produces more actual changes to the website per pound spent, because its output is a list of things to do rather than a dataset to interrogate. SEMrush is the better tool and the worse purchase, unless you have someone whose job it is to use it.

Buy the one your team will open on a Monday.
